FLAGLER COUNTY, Fla. – The new roundabout configuration at Cody’s Corner – the intersection of State Road (S.R.) 11 (Perkins Highway) and County Road (C.R.) 304 in Flagler County – opened to traffic on December 4. The new roundabout is being constructed to improve safety at the rural intersection, which has experienced numerous crashes with fatalities and serious injuries in recent years.

While the new roundabout traffic pattern is now operational, the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) will continue construction on the overall project into next year. During construction, motorists are advised to use extra caution when traveling through Cody’s Corner.

Barrels, signage, and message boards are in place to help guide drivers through the construction work zone. Vehicles should enter the roundabout by going to the right and continuing counterclockwise. Traffic entering the roundabout must yield to those already present, but drivers should not stop if it is clear to enter.  

Both S.R. 11 and C.R. 304 will remain open to traffic during construction; however, single lane closures with flagging operations can be expected throughout the project.

A roundabout is a circular intersection with no traffic signals, where traffic flows in a one-way counterclockwise direction. Key navigation rules include yielding to traffic already in the roundabout, not changing lanes or stopping, signaling before exiting, and yielding to pedestrians and bicyclists.

Compared to traditional traffic signals, roundabouts reduce the likelihood of crashes, resulting in severe injuries and fatalities by up to 82 percent. Roundabouts also decrease the number of vehicle conflict points where crashes can occur, making the intersection safer for both motorists and pedestrians.

When driving through the work zone, stay alert, adhere to the posted work zone speed limit, avoid all distractions, be cautious of shifts in traffic patterns, and give yourself plenty of distance from the driver ahead of you.
